WHAT IS NATHERS?

A clear measure of thermal performance.

NatHERS uses accredited software to model how much heating and cooling a home is likely to need to remain comfortable.

The assessment is completed from the design plans and specifications before construction. It produces a thermal star rating out of 10 and helps demonstrate whether the proposed home meets the applicable energy-efficiency requirements.

At ERA, the result is only part of the work. We also help you understand what is driving it and where practical design or specification decisions can improve the outcome.

WHAT INFLUENCES THE RATING?

Every decision works together.

A rating is not determined by one product or one specification. The complete design, location and building envelope are assessed together.

01

Orientation

How each part of the home responds to its local climate and solar exposure.

02

Glazing

Window size, location, frame type and glass performance.

03

Insulation

R-values and the continuity of insulation through walls, floors, ceilings and roofs.

04

Construction

Materials, thermal mass, floor systems, roof types and the building envelope.

05

Shading

Eaves, awnings, balconies and surrounding elements that affect solar gain.

06

Design

Layout, zoning, room sizes, ceiling heights, openings and overall building form.

THE ERA APPROACH

Achieving compliance is one thing.
Achieving it intelligently is another.

01

Assess early

Early modelling creates more opportunity to resolve performance pressure points before plans and specifications are locked in.

02

Test the right variables

We review orientation, glazing, insulation, shading and construction together to find the most practical pathway—not simply the biggest upgrade.

03

Protect the build outcome

Our focus is compliance that makes sense for the design, the specification, the construction programme and the total cost to build.

04

Stay available

Builders and design teams have direct access to experienced assessors when results, revisions or construction requirements need clarification.

PROJECT EXPERIENCE

From one home to an entire portfolio.

Our assessment team supports individual projects, repeat designs and large residential programmes across different orientations and climate zones.

READY TO BEGIN?

What we need
for an assessment.

Send what you have if the design is still developing. Final certification will require plans and specifications that reflect what will be approved and built.

01

Architectural plans

Site plan with orientation, floor plans, elevations and sections.

02

Windows and doors

Schedules, sizes, frame types and glazing performance where known.

03

Construction specifications

Walls, floors, ceilings, roof, insulation, roof colour and floor coverings.

04

Shading information

Eaves, awnings, balconies, pergolas and relevant overshadowing details.

COMMON QUESTIONS

NatHERS, explained simply.

When should we organise the assessment?+

Ideally during design development, before specifications are fully locked in. This gives us more scope to test practical options and avoid late changes.

Does every project need exactly 7 stars?+

The applicable pathway depends on the project, building class, jurisdiction and approval requirements. ERA will confirm the relevant target when reviewing your project.

What happens if the design does not initially comply?+

We identify the factors affecting performance and test suitable changes, focusing on practical solutions that work with the design and build specification.

Do revisions need to be reassessed?+

Changes to windows, insulation, materials, orientation, shading, layout or building form can affect the result. We review relevant changes to confirm the compliance pathway remains valid.

How long does an assessment take?+

Our typical target is 5–10 working days once the required project information has been received. Timing may vary with project size, complexity and revision requirements.
